Adults 18 and up can now borrow and take home a Google Chromebook laptop and/or a Mobile Wi-Fi Hot Spot from the Rockford Public Library!

They are available for checkout at the Montague Branch Library, on RPL’s Mobile Library, and at the Hart Interim Library!

Are you an adult student, an entrepreneur, or someone who’s working on a longer-term project? Most of our Chromebooks are loanable for up to 90 days! Some can be reserved for a shorter, week-long borrowing term. Most of our Wi-Fi Hot Spots check out for up to 3 weeks, with select Wi-Fi Hot Spots structured to be quick-checkout versions for one week.

At the point of checkout, our staff will mentor you on how to use the devices. We’ll perform a visual inventory with you of all the parts included such as the Chromebook itself and or the Wi-Fi Hot Spot, the carrying case, the charging cord, and some included instructional items. Once all that is complete and you sign our lending agreement, you’ll be on your way to exploring the internet; and all Chromebooks and Wi-Fi Hot Spots have to offer!

When you’re ready to return the Chromebook or Mobile Wi-Fi Hot Spot, please bring the items back inside to the same location and check it in with a staff member. We’ll perform the visual inventory of the kit again with you to confirm everything is in proper working order and then ensure it is cleaned and ready to go for the next customer.

Chromebook and Mobile Wi-Fi Hot Spot FAQ

Chromebooks and Wi-Fi Hot Spots are available at the Montague Branch, on RPL’s Mobile Library, and at the Hart Interim Library.

All users must be RPL Library Cardholders with accounts in good standing and must be 18 years or older. Devices will not be checked out to reciprocal borrowers from other libraries at this time.

Chromebooks are checked out for either 7- or 90-day borrowing periods based on a first-come, first-served availability.

At this time, Chromebooks and Wi-Fi Hot Spots must be brought back and checked in once a borrowing period has elapsed. However, if another device is available at that time, it may be checked out.

A library staff member’s name is listed on each Chromebook. Contact that person at the location from where you checked the device out for assistance.

Chromebooks and Wi-Fi Hot Spots may not be placed on hold at this time.

We also offer Wi-Fi Hot Spots for checkout which will allow you to use the internet wherever you are within service limits. In the meantime, all of our Chromebooks can connect to Wi-Fi signals at our library locations or other organizations that have public Wi-Fi.

There is a $5.00 per day overdue fee that will be assessed to the library card account. Once a device becomes overdue its systems will be turned off remotely by library staff and you will no longer be able to login to the device.

To borrow these devices, you must sign a lending agreement that states that you agree to reimburse the cost of lost, stolen or damaged items to the Rockford Public Library. You will be billed for the costs of replacement as listed on the lending agreement. You must report loss or theft immediately so we can protect you and attempt to assist authorities in locating the devices.

During our check-in process, all personal information will be deleted from the Chromebook to ensure your data has been removed and that it’s ready for the next user.

We want you to feel confident in using these devices wherever you are, so we’re happy to arrange mentoring opportunities with you.
