Rockford Public Library will host its Battle of the Bands competition on Sunday, October 21st from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the Rock Box, 317 West Jefferson. The event, scheduled during national Teen Read Week, will feature 7 local bands competing for cash and prizes. Admission for the evening is $6. Concessions and an event t-shirt will be available for purchase that evening.
The Battle of the Bands was a concept initially developed by RPL’s Young Adult Advisory Board, a group of teen volunteers active at the Library. The YA Board is taking an active role in coordinating and promoting the event.
The format, much like the popular American Idol, will combine scores from a panel of judges and audience votes. Judges will rate each band on stage presence, sound volume and clarity, band synchronization, song quality and originality, stage management and band enthusiasm. The cumulative judges’ score will count for 50% of the total. The audience votes will count for the other 50%. The winning band stands to win a $500 in cash, eight hours of studio time and a professionally shot music video. Prizes will also be awarded for second and third place bands.
“This is an event that young adults can really be involved in,” said Heaether Venetucci-Johnson, Young Adult Librarian at Rockford Public Library. “Not only did they get the opportunity to help pick the bands whocompete, but ultimately, they have a voice in who wins the prize. It’s very exciting.”
