Rockford Public Library will celebrate the release of the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with a Harry Potter Party on Friday, July 20th from 9:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. The Main Library downtown will close at 6:00 p.m. that evening and doors will re-open to the public at 9:00 p.m. after the building has been “magically” transformed for guests to experience Harry Potter like they never have before.
Guests can cross “Hogwarts’ Pond” on the Forest City Queen, or ride the RMTD trolley from the Riverview Ice House to the Main Library. Upon arrival, they will be sorted into “houses” and can participate in a variety of activities throughout the library including taking a potions or herbology class, seeing a live owl demonstration by Hoo Haven, creating their own magic wand or magical creature, visiting Dumbledore’s Office and looking into the “Pensieve,” or sending their own “owl mail” e-postcard. Wonderland Books will be selling copies of the book to be distributed at midnight and copies will be available for checkout from the library.
“The Harry Potter series is remarkable in many ways,” said Frank Novak, Executive Director of Rockford Public Library. “It has captured the hearts and imaginations of young and old alike. Over the past years, we’ve seen Harry and his friends grow and now we will know how this amazing story ends. It’s very exciting.”
The Rockford Public Library hosted a similar library event for the sixth installment of the series in 2005 and over 2,500 guests attended. This year, the library has planned for an even larger turnout.
“It’s exciting for the staff at the library to see so many people here, dressed in costume, ready to believe and jump into the Harry Potter story,” said Karla Janssen-White, Harry Potter Party Coordinator. “No matter how hectic the evening gets, we know everything will work out in the end. After all, it’s magic!”
