Swedish Heritage in Rockford Explored at Rockford Public Library

Swedish genealogists present workshop at Rockford Public Library

The ties to Swedish culture and heritage in the Rockford community are unmistakable and four genealogists from Sweden will help locals research their own Swedish roots with a series of workshops on May 5th at Rockford Public Library. The Swedish genealogists include Charlotte Börjesson, who presented similar workshops in Rockford in 2004; Anna-Lena Hultman, a well known emigration expert; Olof Cronberg, an icon in the genealogical world in Sweden; and Anneli Andersson, who presents information about the life the Swedes led and why so many left. The four are on a working tour of the United States.

Rockford Public Library’s Swedish Genealogical program consists of two events. The first is a presentation on Swedish history and useful information for those interested in beginning research into their own Swedish lineage. The presentation is limited to 20 individuals per session and sessions are offered at 9:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on May 5th. The second program is a hands-on computer workshop that walks participants through some of the online tools for Swedish genealogical research including Genline and Svar. The computer class is limited to nine participants per session with sessions offered at 9:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on May 5th.These programs are free and open to the public but registration is limited. Individuals may register for one or both programs by visiting our online event calendar or calling (815) 965-7606.

The workshop comes on the heels of other exciting ties to Sweden in Rockford including the He & She art exhibit at the Rockford Art Museum and a visit from a delegation attending the Swedish-American Entrepreneurial Days in Chicago.
