One Book, One Rockford to Kick-off in Spring

Anthony Bourdain to visit Rockford in May

Rockford Public Library’s annual community-wide reading program, One Book, One Rockford, is slated to kick-off in the spring, but there is already quite a buzz about the selected title and author. This year, the library has chosen to feature Anthony Bourdain and his bestselling book, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. The goal of the program is to encourage all Rockford residents to read the selected title, and then attend library programs, book discussions, and the author lecture on May 18th.

“The response to Anthony Bourdain’s visit to Rockford has been amazing,” said Frank Novak, Executive Director of Rockford Public Library. “We knew he was a popular personality, but we in no way anticipated the level of enthusiasm people would have about seeing and meeting him.”

That enthusiasm has translated to over 650 registrations since the library placed Bourdain’s May 18, 2007 free lecture on their website calendar—an unprecedented number for a One Book, One Rockford selected author.

“We traditionally try to get 100-200 people to an author lecture like this and now we are trying to find a way to handle the huge response we have received,” commented Ellen Olson, One Book, One Rockford committee chair. “It’s a great problem to have. We hope this brings a whole new audience to library programs.”

In addition to Anthony Bourdain’s lecture on May 18th, the library is also hosting a series of programs centered around the culinary arts, local restaurants and the book itself. All One Book, One Rockford programs are listed below. For more information about the One Book, One Rockford event or any associated programs, please call Rockford Public Library at (815) 965-7606.
