Facts & Figures
Governance:
Rockford Public Library, a municipal library, is governed by a nine member Library Board appointed by the Mayor of Rockford and approved by City Council. After appointment, trustees serve a three-year term. Trustees are not compensated for their service on the Board of Trustees. A July 2004 investigative report by the Rockford Register Star found that the Rockford Public Library Board of Trustees had the best attendance of the four municipal appointed governing boards in the city of Rockford.

| Interesting Facts about the Collection: |
In 2004, Rockford Public Library joined less than ten libraries in the world in instituting an innovative "floating" collection. This means that materials are shared throughout all locations and are most often shelved where they are returned. The advantages to the user and taxpayer are: 1) Items spend less time on delivery trucks so materials are more likely to be on the shelf for people to check out, 2) there is always something fresh on the shelf because the collection is always changing, and 3) the individual collections are designed by the patron's "invisible hand" so that items end up where they are most often checked out.
The Main Library Local History collection, a collection 9,000+ items, contains the Andrew M. Potter Collection of 300 volumes of 19th Century memoirs, regimental histories, histories of campaigns and other materials dealing with the accounts of the Civil War. |
